I was a little nervous for this year of Kindergarten for Alexis. Our school district decided to start an all day kindergarten. It was a very hard decision to put her in kindergarten this year instead of the PEPP program for kids with late birthdays. Then when the year started it seemed to be going well especially since the first month of school was half day. Then it moved to whole day but I would take her out a few days a week early. I don't think the Principal liked me very much. I don't think it helped that I would always write things like "needs to be with Mommy" or "school is too long for a 5 year old" or needs family time on the reason for checking her out early. After a slow transition I left her in a little longer and she seemed to be doing just fine. Then about half way through the year she decided that she didn't like school. She would cry every morning when it was time to leave. Then she would cling to her teacher all day. She got very clingy with me at home and everywhere else we went. We tried little games to help her get excited to go to school. The one that worked the best was when I wrote her name on a banana with a little flower. She was so excited to go to school that day and I think we turned a corner. She was still clingy but she didn't start the day in tears. After seeing what she went through this year I want to tell every well meaning person on the school board that thinks they know whats best for our children......you don't have a clue. Our 5 year olds need the fun part of kindergarten but they also need to be home with their Mom's and siblings during the day.
