USS MIDWAY

Midway Then and Now

Since we live in the most beautiful city in America (OK - so I am biased but San Diego is beautiful) it is really sad how little of the city I go out and enjoy on my own volition. It could be that I have 5 kids, one of which takes 2 naps a day which makes it hard to do go anywhere but let's be real, it's really that I am a homebody. Once I do get out I realize what a hermit I am and how I need to get out more. The USS Midway is no exception. It is now one of my favorite San Diego spots. It is right on the harbor so you can see Coronado, the San Diego sky line and the harbor all around you. Not to mention that you are standing on a retired air craft carrier that saw service in Vietnam and has a crew of 4,500. I've done the tour before but this was my first time with Kaden. I think he appreciated the guns, bombs and planes a lot more than Taylor did. This trip was extra special because we had a retired Naval officer that took us on the tour. His grandson was in the class and we got to follow him around while he told us what life was like on the tour. The USS Midway gives you a greater sense of your freedom brought to you by the sacrifice of our guide and others who give their service to us and our country. What a blessing this country, this city and our freedom is.

Kaden in the cockpit of a genuine fighter jet

The boys were fascinated by all the weaponry

I didn't know that.....

They have all the crew lined up with their different shirts. Each crew member has a different shirt for a different position. They said that a plane takes off every few seconds so the pilots need to be able to differentiate between the people on deck.

Kaden sitting on a bomb.....we seem to have a few boys that sit on those during dinner.

The cafeteria. We were so surprised at how well they ate on the ship.

The kids got to see how electricity was routed. I would be lying if I said I already knew how it worked....Maybe they need to have a class for adults. I bet the kids could teach us a few things.

What a stud

Our wonderful guide. Thank you for your years of service!
