Tanner did it again. I got a phone call about 9:15 on a Monday morning the first hour in the first day of scout camp saying that I should come and pick him up. I hoped that he was being a bit of a hypochondriac and would be fine. When I talked to the nurse at the camp she said I should probably take him to urgent care. That is when I realized that I should probably go and pick him up. As soon as I got up there and saw his arm I realized that it was bad. His whole elbow was swollen. The scout camp didn't have a splint but they improvised and broke down a graham cracker box and his camp shirt to make an impromptu sling. After seeing his arm and his tough little stoic face I knew we were most likely headed to castville. I immediately took him in to our family friend who is an Orthopedic surgeon. We got quick x-rays and confirmed what we already thought - it was broken. Last year he broke is left elbow so apparently he just wanted an even pair of broken arms. The bummer was he had to miss scout camp and the break happened a few days before we left for Canada. Huge bummer for an 8 year old boy (and a Mom). Luckily we had great care and Tanner was a tough little trooper through the whole thing. He had to start out with a white cast but he got a black one put one the week after and now he has moved on to purple. He even had Mo Williams from the Cleveland Cavaliers sign his cast. He is making the most of a bad situation.
He was a trooper through all of the x-rays, cast removals and new casts. He got a little ribbing for wearing his Celtics shirt after the Lakers won but he wore his Celtic green with pride.
The lifesaver for us has been this cast cover. Luckily we had a couple of friends that had recently broken their arms and found this great product. You can find it at http://www.xerosox.com/ This made it possible so that Tanner didn't miss a beat this summer. He can swim, do waterslides, slip and slide, the beach etc. He went to 3 different pools the other day and swam in all of them including soaking in the jacuzzi for a while. His cast has stayed dry the whole time. I just have to make sure that the air stays sucked out the whole time and we are good to go. We went quite a while with no broken bones and now in the last 2 years we have had 5 broken bones. Hopefully our broken bone streak is gone! 5 seems like a good number to end with but since I will have 4 boys I can just imagine that we may have a few more broken bones before it is all said and done.
