Balboa Park Scavenger Hunt

Tanner had this awesome field trip planned to Balboa Park and the night before Callen got really sick.  I had this goal to go on all of the field trips with the kids this year so I was in a panic as to how I could still go.  Luckily Callen was much better in the morning and Taylor was able to watch him.  Phew!  Thanks Taylor!  The field trip was incredible.  I grew up in San Diego but Balboa Park has always intimidated me.  Maybe because it is so big and I ALWAYS get lost.  This field trip made Balboa Park make sense for me for the first time.  I now may be able to navigate around there without feeling like a hopeless tourist.  The kids had to find each building and a few things about each building, take a picture and write the information down.  It was a walking field trip which helped with the 8 year olds energy level and kept them having fun the entire time.   It not only entertained the 2nd graders but all the Mom's as well.  I want to take my kids to do this field trip later in the summer (when we aren't in a heat wave) so they can appreciate the beauty and history of Balboa Park.
This was one of my favorite buildings
This conservatory has exotic plants and a koi pond.  The kids loved the koi pond.
I loved the stonework on this building
There was this beautiful courtyard between the buildings that I had to take a picture of.  We took so many pictures today and Tanner was a good sport for all of them.
Tanner definitely likes to pose!
We actually got to hear the organ being played in this amazing outdoor amphitheatre
The kids had to find different types of plants and trees
in the gardens.  This hollowed out tree was their favorite.
My favorite was the flower gardens.  There was every type of rose imaginable and it smelled amazing!
The best part of the day was spending some one on one time with Tanner.  He really is a happy kid.  No matter what happens he is always smiling.  Even if he gets sad or grumpy he snaps out of it quickly with a smile.  I also fully realized how much energy he has.  He ran from thing to thing all day never tiring.  If I could only have a quarter of that energy while pregnant I would be good to go!
This massive tree was spectacular.  Too bad it was fenced off the kids were
dying to climb it.  Which is probably why it is fenced off!
We even got to see a couple of dinosaurs - a total highlight for Tanner
After the walking field trip we went to the science museum.  There was so much to see, do and touch that we could have stayed there for hours.  Tanner is being a mad scientist in this picture.
He got to create a whirlwind of steam here.  This picture cracks me up because it looks so much like my brother Jacob when he was a little boy.  They are like mini clones.  They both were obsessed with green, blonde, freckles and even have the same feet.  The good part is Tanner doesn't turn into the "mean sandwich" or chase neighbors with sharp objects.
