Easy Family Hike

Our ward organized a family hike for an activity.  I thought it would be fun but not a good workout and the kids went strictly for the donuts.  The donuts were served at 8 and as we got there 1 minute early the kids were positive the donuts were going to be gone.  Luckily we were one of the first families to get there so there were plenty of donuts.  Callen downed at least 5 at my last count.
Callen had no concept of heights.  He just parked himself right on the edge to enjoy the view and rest from being carried up the hill.

The flyer for the ward activity said "family friendly hike".  Travis was at a conference so I figured I could just take the kids and handle it on my own.  I figured I would let Callen run around and the kids would have a blast.  I had no idea that we would be hiking to the top of the mountain.  Nor did I anticipate having to lug a 40 pound brick up the mountain.  Every time I would put Callen down he would immediately say "Mommy I want to hold you".  I mean really, how do I resist that?  I tried shifting sides, piggy back and even carrying him like a baby.  None of it was particularly easy since he is solid as they come.  Luckily I had some friends there that held Lexie's hand so I didn't have both of them hanging on me.  It turned out to be a beautiful day and a MAJOR workout.  Who needs the gym when I can just lift Callen?
The amazing girls
The tough boys
I was so proud of Lexie - she walked the whole way.  She kept asking me how many more minutes and I would say 15, then 10, then 5 hoping it really was 5.  She was so proud of herself when she got to the top.  Now when we drive by the mountain I point to the cell towers on top and say "who climbed that"?  Lexie responds "I did - all by myself".  That was worth any fatigue
I might be feeling at the end of the day.

This is a great story. you could definitely use it to draw parallels to life the way the general YW pres (can't think of her name I'm still sleep deprived) always does in her conference talks! I can't imagine as I have a 43 pound brick myself:)
