Taylor's last field trip of the year was to the La Brea Tar Pits. I had always wanted to go but had never wanted to drive to LA and fight the traffic. The school rented charter buses and a day with Taylor sounded fun. Then the week came. It was one of those crazy weeks, we had just gotten back from Italy, we had guests in town, I was hosting book club for a book I hadn't finished the night of the field trip, I had 2 other field trips that week plus I was speaking at a stake wide women's conference that weekend and of course I hadn't started preparing for that. Not to mention that I started to get sick and I never get sick. I went to Taylor and told her that I just couldn't do this trip. Long story short she was quite sad, I was sad that I made her sad and instead survived on much less sleep that week but ended up having a great and memorable day with Taylor. After all, when will she be 12 at the La Brea Tar Pits ever again?
It was pretty amazing to see all the dinosaur bones they had dug up right in the heart of LA.
There were tons of girls to make learning about dinosaurs much more enjoyable.
There was some tar where the girls tried to pull up on a stick stuck in the tar to see what it was like for the animals that were stuck. Have you ever tried to pull the sword out from the Sword in the Stone at Disneyland? Just imagine that but stickier.
Taylor's class and her amazing teacher Ms. Fallentine
These are actual tar pits that are being excavated.
They have this room where you can look in and see the scientists and paleontologists working on actual fossils they have dug up. This was a mammoth that they named Zed. It was enormous and it was simply his lower jaw bone.

It was an awesome day. Full of memories and fun. To sum it up, I didn't finish the book for book club ( I HATE doing that), I went on the other field trips, managed to clean up my house for guests, make cookies for a book club treat and pulled off a talk for the women's conference. I guess Steven Covey is right - when you put the big rocks in first the smaller rocks all manage to fit in as well.
