It was a great first birhtday. We had as much family over as we could and had dinner and dessert. We had shredded chicken burritos (you can see them on our cooking blog www.sandiegocooks.blogspot.com) they were perfect because then I felt like at least Callen had some veggies before he had his cake. I think he was a little overwhelmed by all the attention but he ended up having a good birthday. I really can't believe that he is one. Where did the year go? I was in a sleep deprived haze for the first months but I still feel like I need a universal remote to slow life down so I can enjoy every moment with my family before we have to move on to the next stage. All in all it was a great day, messy, loud, good food, good dessert and lots of family. What more could we ask for?

Happy Birthday Callen! We have a fun but messy tradition in our house for the first birthdays. The kids get to make a mess with their own birthday cake. It has been fun to see each of their different personalities come out in how they attack (or don't attack) the cake.

Callen wasn't timid at all, he used a search and destroy method adding make a complete mess all around him.

After a while he started slowing down. I think he is spiking on a sugar high considering he hasn't had much sugar up to this point in his life....
I feel sick.....
The kids wanted to get a little messy too.
Finally he can get clean! That frosting was greasy!
His monkey is his favorite toy. He has to sleep with it and carry it all around the house. He loves to give the monkey big kisses. We have to figure out a name for the monkey or it will always be very originally "monkey".
He got a new rocking horse that the other kids love more than Callen does.
We had a lot of family here - the best part! Callen loves Natalie. He is getting a little "stranger danger" but he always wants Natalie.
Time for bed. This is one of my favorite parts of the day - not just because I know the house will soon be quiet and clean but this is when I get the most hugs, kisses and cuddle time. Plus all of the sudden the kids want to talk and tell me all about their day and Callen winds down enough to let me hold him for a while.
